Welcome to Craighouse! Craighouse is at the heart of the community on Jura and home to production headquarters of Deer Island. This is where you’ll land if you take the Jura Passenger Ferry to Jura from Tayvallich, and where you’ll see most people out and about.
In Craighouse, we have our brilliant volunteer run village hall that has been hosting a wide variety events for decades: anything from family ceilidhs and weddings to live theatre, festivals, races and circuit training. The ultimate venue for Island Life.
Craighouse also boasts our life saving community owned shop, where you can get anything from cheddar cheese to paintbrushes, calendars and local produce. Keep an eye on the shelves outside, where you might get some seeds or homegrown veg from a Jura garden.
The Antlers Ice Cream Café (complete with rotating cake stand) is cosy, friendly and fun and you can choose your ice-cream by Island. The lunch and takeaway menu is brimming with deliciousness too.
Wonder your way to the Jura Bar and family run hotel and grab a local beverage in the beer garden. Another excellent menu with plenty local produce, and a lively bar too!
Jura Whisky Distillery is also right next door, be sure to pop in for a tour and a sample!
If you’ve been perusing our social media for a while, you’ll have seen Kirsty’s amazing sourdough bakes from The Island Bakehouse. Kirsty does everything from her cottage in Craighouse. In line with our zero waste aims, we give Kirsty our rum soaked raisins for Deer Island themed cinnamon swirls, brownies, tiffin, buns… they’re insane. Hear more about Kirsty’s business here.
You’ll find Deer Island Rum HQ on your way past the hotel towards the Pier, nestled between Elaine’s craft shop Camella Crafts (hear about Elaines business here) and Konrad’s photographic Whisky Gallery.
Our friend recently referred to the Community Business Hub as Jura’s answer to a ‘shopping centre’ which gave us a good laugh, but seriously - get your fuel, souvenirs and essential provisions (rum) all in one go! We love working here, made even better by you guys coming in for a chat and to try a rum.
